Council Grove was named one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas History by the Kansas Sampler Foundation because it is a Santa Fe Trail National Historic Landmark town and is the site of an 1825 treaty that led to an intersection of cultures between Kaw Native Americans and Euro-Americans.

The first European-American settler was Seth M. Hays, who came to the area in 1847 to trade with the Kaw tribe, which had a reservation established in the area in 1846.
The Council Grove Historic District is a National Historic Landmark District located in Council Grove, Kansas, United States. It consists of six discontiguous areas in the city important in the history of the Santa Fe Trail and American migration to the west in the 19th century.
In 1868, the first school was established in Council Grove. That same year the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad was built through Morris County, bringing many new citizens to Council Grove. Morris County received its last Indian scare in June 1868 when some 400 Cheyenne Indians flooded Council Grove armed and painted for war.
