The origins of Sanford's connection to celery farming began on December 26, 1894, when a freeze damaged the area's citrus groves. They began to recover during a warm and wet January which promoted new shoots, but a second freeze hit on February 7, 1895, practically wiping them out.
Although different vegetables were tried, by 1927, it was decided to grow predominantly celery. Roads were built across the area. Since the muck was constituted in great part by acid, lime was added: 1.5 to 2 tons of ground limestone and 1 to 1.5 tons of hydrated lime per acre.
The settler Benjamin Wadsworth laid out the town of Arvada in 1870, giving it the name of one of his wife’s relatives. Arvada’s farms grew wheat, corn, and other vegetables and fruits. So much celery was produced that the town was promoted as “the celery capital of the world.”
