By the 1600s it was a free-standing, four-poster, tester bedstead, laid with mattresses that ranged in comfort and expense from straw or chaff, to flock or feather fillings. Ideally, the coverings for such a bed would include hand-worked linen sheets, decorative bed covers, such as quilts and counterpanes, and bed 10 curtains.
