Historical Society and Museum. Keeping History Alive in Leavenworth County. The Leavenworth County Historical Society endeavors to tell the one-of-a-kind stories of Leavenworth’s past with exhibits, historical programs, and community outreach initiatives.
The Land where Leavenworth and Fort Leavenworth are located today was originally inhabited by the Kansa, Osage, and Delaware Indians, and today many of our streets are named after these and other local Indian tribes. In 1858, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth settled here.
As the main repository of the Leavenworth County legacy of history, the Society has continued its mission of discovering, preserving and sharing that history. The Carroll House serves not only as a house museum of Leavenworth artifacts, but also as an archive and research center of that history.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30-4:30 (children under 4 are admitted for free into this historic house). Today, this house contains many precious artifacts detailing the history of Leavenworth and provides a crucial key to help understand this quaint Kansas town.
Throughout those early years, heroes and villains walked these streets and some of the more notorious will show up in association with the city’s early-built environment. This page includes examples of mid-to-late 19th and early 20th century buildings that help bring history to the present.
With a large circular map on the ground, visitors get an interesting view of key Kansas locations and history, including the Oregon Trail. A fun sculpture is a locomotive that looks like a puzzle coming out of a grassy mound. With plenty of trees lining the shoreline, Leavenworth Landing Park is an excellent location for eagle watching.
