With its first gold discovery in 1824, Gold Hill is considered one of today’s most charming and historic small towns in North Carolina. Gold Hill is home to numerous gold mines. The 850ft deep Randolph Mine and the 435ft deep Barnhardt Mine became two of the most famous and profitable gold mines in the southeast.
The annual Gold Hill Founders Day, held in September, celebrates the town’s history with arts and crafts, live music, and family-friendly activities. Another popular event is the Gold Hill Ghost Tour in October, a spooky evening of hayrides and ghost stories at key historic locations within the Gold Hill Mines Historic Park.
The historic park has a log barn, the old Gold Hill stone jail from 1845, a playground, picnic areas, hiking trails, fenced off mine shafts, the powder house, the spring fed Gold Hill pond, post office, assay office, etc.
