1.1 This document is a statement of current best practice in primary total hip replacement (THR) and metal-on-metal hip resurfacing (MOMR) in the United Kingdom (UK) in all settings. It has been approved by the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and by the Executive and Members of the British Hip Society (BHS).
Treatment. Hip Resurfacing. Patients with advanced arthritis of the hip may be candidates for either traditional total hip replacement (arthroplasty) or hip resurfacing (hip resurfacing arthroplasty). Each of these procedures is a type of hip replacement, but there are important differences.
Benefits. The BHR is particularly suited active male patients requiring hip replacement. Hip resurfacing tends to be a better match to the size of the patient’s own hip. This reduces the risk of dislocation and some patients report the hip feels more ‘normal’.

Hip Resurfacing arthroplasty is intended for patients with failure of the hip joint who are likely to outlive or outperform a traditional total hip replacement (THR).
