In recent years, much has been accomplished in clarifying its structure and its possible function in host immunity. This article summarizes current knowledge of CRP, with emphasis on clinical applications in pediatrics.
In particular, CRP mean values were significantly higher in babies born by vaginal delivery (3.80 mg/L) and emergency caesarean section (3.60 mg/L) than in babies born by elective caesarean section (2.10 mg/L).
CRP values were higher in EOS positive newborns (mean 27.0±32.7 vs. 17.9±19.0 mg/L). CRP values differed between preterm and term infants (mean 13.0±23.6 vs. 5.8±10.2 mg/L) despite comparable rates of EOS (19% and 18%, respectively).
8 mar 2024 · CRP use in infants undergoing an EOS evaluation varied across centers and over the study years. In each study year, most centers were either low-use centers (CRP use in < 25% of EOS evaluations), or high-use centers (CRP use in > 75% of EOS evaluations).
CRP levels have been found to be helpful in differential diagnosis and in following the clinical course and response to treatment of various disorders. Of particular interest is their value in the diagnosis of serious bacterial infections in neonates, such as meningitis, septicemia, and osteomyelitis.
