Heroes 3 is the best designed HoMM game. Nice graphics, which hold up to this day. Most content (factions, creatures, spells, heroes), for the most part fine mechanics. Only a couple of secondary skills are quite useless. The variety is unmatched.
One of the biggest reasons to pick 3 over 5 (I love both of them) is that if you play on playing co-operative multiplayer games vs computers, in HoMM 5 the computer turns take an absolutely horrible amount of time to complete on Win7 and later. I've looked for a workaround but not found one.
