6 sie 2024 · Hepatic encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric syndrome caused by acute or chronic advanced hepatic insufficiency. Symptoms vary in severity from a mild alteration in mental state to coma but are often reversible with treatment.
The GDG considered that the current standard treatment of an episode of acute hepatic encephalopathy is directed at reducing the production and absorption of gut-derived neurotoxins, particularly ammonia, mainly through bowel cleansing, and the use of non-absorbable disaccharides, such as lactulose.
After a brief overview of HE characteristics and pathophysiology, this review explores the current accepted treatments for this debilitating complication of cirrhosis.
