Figure 19.2 Position of the Heart in the Thorax The heart is located within the thoracic cavity, medially between the lungs in the mediastinum. It is about the size of a fist, is broad at the top (called the base), and tapers toward the apex.
The right atrium pumps blood through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. The right ventricle pumps blood through the pulmonary semilunar valve into the pulmonary trunk to be oxygenated in the lungs. Blood returning from the lungs drains into the left atrium via the four pulmonary veins.
