Rhinitis or sinusitis may result when a root abscess on an upper tooth extends further upward. Because of increased amounts of mucus, dogs with longterm rhinitis often develop bacterial infections in the nose and sinuses. Signs of rhinitis include nasal discharge, sneezing, snoring, open-mouth breathing, and/or labored breathing.
Decongestant nasal sprays containing xylometazoline, oxymetazoline are effective in relieving nasal congestion but do not produce wakefulness nor reduce milk supply. They are safe and effective but should not be used long term (more than 7 days).
Keeping your dog hydrated, using a humidifier, and using saline nasal drops or spray can all help your dog breathe better if they have nasal congestion. Be sure to consult with your veterinarian for additional recommendations.
