For HD channels that are encrypted, you can use an HD cable box/DVR tune them and connect a PC capture device to either its component out or HDMI out to record. The downside is that you will be limited to watching what is being recorded when these devices are in use.
Update: So I went to the Spectrum store and traded my boxes in for the Arris DCX3600-M, AND two "classic" remotes from the Time Warner days. (UR5U-8780L-TWC) They didn't have any Spectrum 201s in stock.

6 tuners, 1 TB hard drive, great user interface. Over all Time Warner Cable's "Enhanced DVR" is a great box.

Forum discussion: TWC sent me a Scientific Atlanta 8300 series hd-dvr box. These boxes are slow, noisy and old. Is there a new box they are using now for hd and dvr?
