Tertiary (higher) education in the Netherlands is made up of hoger beroepsonderwijs – HBO (higher vocational education) and wetenschappelijk onderwijs – WO (scientific/academic education). These 2 forms of education are provided by hogescholen (polytechnics / universities of applied science) and universities respectively.
27 lis 2023 · To be recognised, fully privately-funded higher education institutions need to be approved by the Education Inspectorate and the Netherlands-Flanders Accreditation Organisation (NVAO). The certificates they award to graduates are equivalent to those awarded by publicly-funded institutions.
There are 3 levels within higher education: Admission to hbo and university when you are older than the age of 21. It can be the case that you are older than 21 years and do not have a havo or vwo diploma. It might be possible for you to do an entrance exam which, when passed, provides you with a chance to study hbo or university.
Student finance consists of different components, such as the basic grant, the supplementary grant, the student travel product, the interest bearing loan and the tuition fees loan (for HBO and university only).
In the education route, the goal is to validate formally/non-formally/informally acquired competences against national qualification standards, to support further learning: to grant exemptions or to acquire partial/full formal qualifications in VET and higher education, and for entry to an education programme.
