With a DigiD you can access online services offered by all Dutch government organisations. You will receive an activation code by letter within 3 working days of your application. Log in to Mijn DUO to apply for student finance.
The basic grant is a gift if you are in MBO level 1 (‘entrée-opleiding’) or 2. For MBO level 3 or 4, HBO, and university programmes, the basic grant is a ‘performance grant’. This means the basic grant becomes a gift if you obtain your diploma within 10 years.

Student finance for students in MBO, HBO and university is funded by the Dutch government. Some components of student finance are grants, others are loans that you have to repay.
The basic grant has been reinstated in higher education (HBO and university) from 1 September 2023. The basic grant is a performance-related grant and will remain a grant if you obtain your degree within 10 years.
