The basic grant is a gift if you are in MBO level 1 (‘entrée-opleiding’) or 2. For MBO level 3 or 4, HBO, and university programmes, the basic grant is a ‘performance grant’. This means the basic grant becomes a gift if you obtain your diploma within 10 years.
Student finance consists of different components, such as the basic grant, the supplementary grant, the student travel product, the interest bearing loan and the tuition fees loan (for HBO and university only).

You can apply for a basic grant if you are 18 or older and doing a school-based vocational course (BOL) at an MBO institution. Or if you are doing a higher education (HBO or university) course. The size of your basic grant depends on where you’re living: at home (with your parents/carers) or away from home.
