Applying for past months. You can still get student finance for past months, up to the start of the current academic year (1 August for MBO, 1 September for HBO or university). This is called applying retroactively. You cannot apply for a student travel product for past months.
The basic grant is a gift if you are in MBO level 1 (‘entrée-opleiding’) or 2. For MBO level 3 or 4, HBO, and university programmes, the basic grant is a ‘performance grant’. This means the basic grant becomes a gift if you obtain your diploma within 10 years.
All students in the Netherlands who are going to study full-time at an officially recognized study program (not a private education or course organization) can borrow money from DUO to study. You can apply for a student loan from DUO.
Higher vocational education (HBO) The 43 HBO institutions in the Netherlands together offer 200 programmes in a wide range of disciplines. They provide theoretical and practical training for occupations for which a higher vocational qualification is either required or useful.
Please ensure that you submit your application 3 months in advance, and preferably even earlier. This way, you will find out on time about your eligibility for student finance for a degree programme abroad.
14 lip 2023 · Today, education minister Robert Dijkgraaf submitted draft legislation to the House of Representatives to reintroduce the basic grant for all students in higher education. This will significantly improve their financial situation from the 2023/2024 academic year.
