If you are enrolled as a student in university, HBO, or MBO, you can apply for student finance. Apply in time, preferably 8 weeks before your student finance is due to start, so you don’t miss out on any money.
The basic grant is a gift if you are in MBO level 1 (‘entrée-opleiding’) or 2. For MBO level 3 or 4, HBO, and university programmes, the basic grant is a ‘performance grant’. This means the basic grant becomes a gift if you obtain your diploma within 10 years.
Are you completing a transition year, foundation year or pre-Master’s? You will only receive student finance if you are enrolled as a Bachelor’s student (full-time or work-study). You do not receive student finance from a foreign government.
Higher vocational education (HBO) The 43 HBO institutions in the Netherlands together offer 200 programmes in a wide range of disciplines. They provide theoretical and practical training for occupations for which a higher vocational qualification is either required or useful.
What is student finance? DUO (the Education Executive Agency) pays student finance to eligible students in secondary vocational education (MBO), higher professional education (HBO) and at university (WO). Student finance is funded by the government. Some components of student finance take the form of a loan, which you have to repay.
Studyfinance. DUO offers a €10.000 loan to help you integrate, but all students (even Dutch students), can apply for a loan at DUO. This is called study finance.
