The basic grant is a gift if you are in MBO level 1 (‘entrée-opleiding’) or 2. For MBO level 3 or 4, HBO, and university programmes, the basic grant is a ‘performance grant’. This means the basic grant becomes a gift if you obtain your diploma within 10 years.
If you are studying HBO or university, you can apply for a tuition fees loan, even if you fail to meet the nationality requirements for student finance. How to apply for a tuition fees loan, depends on whether or not you are eligible for student finance.
MBO levels 1 and 2: you are entitled to a basic grant for as long as you are doing training at MBO level 1 or 2. MBO levels 3 and 4: you are entitled to a basic grant for 4 years. HBO and university: you are entitled to a basic grant for the official length of your course. This is usually 4 years.
International students can also get studiefinanciering (study finance) from DUO (eduction executive agency) if they meet the requirements. You must be between 18 and 30 years , study full-time at secondary vocational education (MBO), university of applied science (HBO) or research university.
HBO institutions receive funding from a variety of sources, including government grants, tuition fees and revenues from contracts with third parties (primarily to provide education). Nearly 92% of the total government grant is paid as a block grant that the institution may spend as it sees fit on personnel, material and housing costs.
