17 sie 2006 · Other thoughts on checking out the YM splitter at Home depot ($1300+) against the HF machine. YM splitter had a bunch of the tweaks mentioned above already done - looked like the same design updated. Engine was a 5hp honda compared to my HF 9 hp subaru. Much more steel in the HF splitter - the design philosophy seemed to be spare no I beam.

6 kwi 2008 · I bought a 3-point mount tractor log splitter from Harbor Freight. Got it wednesday. For $500, it's a great deal. Works good, and the quality is surprisingly high. I will not that the bolts that hold the third-link mount are a very weak 4.8 grade metric bolts, and two of them broke off saturday!

The splitters at Harbor Freight are looking pretty good - the OHC Robin engine is a winner, and even though the Haldex pump isn't quite the best (it's very good, though), a grand is a good price for a 30 ton unit.
I usually use a 3-point splitter run off my tractor's hydraulics, but the tractor pump only puts out something like 8gpm, so it's got a slow cycle time. Here's my question: it is sturdy enough to support rolling huge rounds on it from a tractor bucket?
