You can't do anything to encounter the boss sooner or later. It's still good to know when the boss is coming though so that you know whether you're about to visit Charon's mid-biome shop or the shop right before the boss. As someone mentioned, the number of chambers is fixed per zone. Tartarus is 14 chambers.
Always take storyline doors (Sisyphus, Eurydice, Patrocleus). They pause the timer. Use companion trinkets for miniboss and boss fights to shave off lots of time. Meg is the most recommended. In Styx, take a miniboss chamber first. They are the fastest to clear.
