Grossly, the gland appears brownish-red and the left and right lobes are connected by an isthmus. The main purpose of this organ is to produce, store and secrete the iodine-based hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).

The thyroid has a characteristic appearance under H&E stain. Most noticeable are the follicles, composed of a ring of cuboidal epithelial cells called principal cells bounded by a basement membrane and surrounding a lumen filled with pink-staining colloid that consists primarily of thyroglobulin.
