The Grumman F6F Hellcat is an American carrier-based fighter aircraft of World War II. Designed to replace the earlier F4F Wildcat and to counter the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, it was the United States Navy's dominant fighter in the second half of the Pacific War.
The XF6F-3 Hellcat, the prototype of the F6F-3 like that on display, made its maiden flight on July 30, 1942. This was just five weeks after the first prototype Hellcat , the XF6F-1, made its first flight.

The first production F6F-3, fuelled by a R-2800-10, flew on 3 October 1942. It was soon delivered in larger quantities, and reached the first active unit, VF-9 based on the brand new USS Essex, in February 1943.
