The Ancient Greek term for “translation” is “metaphrasis”, meaning “speaking across”. It has supplied English with “metaphrase”, i.e. a literal or word-for-word translation –as contrasted with “paraphrase”, i.e. a saying in other words or a sense-for-sense translation.
