According to recent surveys, there are anywhere from 7,000-11,000 wolves within the state. This makes Alaska home to the largest gray wolf population of any US state. The wide estimate is due to the difficulty of accurately counting wolves in the vast and remote areas they inhabit.
This final project aims to address issues relating to gray wolf habitat fragmentation by assessing the suitability of habitat in northeastern Wisconsin by Lake Superior, near where existing federally designated critical habitat for gray wolves exists (USFWS, 2022b).

Habitat Status. Gray wolf habitat has been reduced drastically. “At one point the gray wolves covered 66% of the Lower 48, United States.” (Habitat status: Listing and Delisting of Wolves in the US, 2020). Today, we see with habitat loss that the gray wolves only cover a fraction of the land they used to, about 10%.
