The Grey Fox is the size of a small dog and looks very similar to the familiar Red Fox. But unlike the Red Fox, the Grey Fox has grizzled grey fur with lighter cinnamon coloured patches on its body. It also has a black tail tip, while the Red Fox has a white tail tip.
The gray fox is the only canine in the western hemisphere that can climb trees. Thanks to sharp, hooked claws it can also jump from branch to branch. But with bobcats, coyotes and dogs as predators it must remain watchful. What does it look like?
The gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), or grey fox, is an omnivorous mammal of the family Canidae, widespread throughout North America and Central America.
In fact, the Gray Fox is a species at risk that is considered Threatened both in Ontario and Canada-wide. Formerly more widespread, provincial populations are currently known from Pelee Island and northwestern Ontario, where the species is at the northern edge of its range.
Gray Fox are the most omnivorous of the North American canids and will consume vegetable matter, such as fruit, year-round. Gray Foxes in Canada are thought to breed from mid-February to mid-March, as they do in the northeastern United States. Most female Gray Foxes breed in their first year and have one litter of 3 - 4 kits per year.
The grey fox, Urocyon cinereoargenteus, is similar to the red fox, but with a number of unique characteristics. Most noticeably, the grey fox’s fur is a grizzled grey colour, with cinnamon-coloured regions on its neck, sides and legs.
