Some EFL teachers perceive that among the language teaching methods, the Grammar Translation Method is the easiest method for the English teacher to achieve their target language through the importance of vocabulary and grammar rules.
The teaching techniques in grammar translation method are as follows-(1) Translation: Translating target language, usually a literary passage to native language. (2) Reading comprehension: Finding information in a passage, making inferences and relating to personal experience.
This study aims to describe the patterns of Grammar Translation Method (GTM) and to know the reasons why the teachers used the method. Descriptive qualitative method was applied. The subjects were two English teachers at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Palangka Raya. It was used observation and questionnaires to collect the data.
In this chapter, we will first present the development of the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) from a historical perspective. We will then discuss the underlying theoretical principles, followed by a description of the instructional techniques used in this method. The chapter will end with a sample lesson.
