In the Hebrew Scriptures, the idea of God as love is conveyed by applying to him various adjectives such as חַנּוּן— channun (“gracious”), רַחוּם— rachum (“compassionate”), and אָרֵךְ— ’arek (“patient”) and by describing him in terms of nouns such as חֶסֶד —chesed (“tender mercy” or “lovingkindness”) and חֵן— (“grace”).
In the Hebrew Bible, writes Wyschogrod, God’s love is “a love very much aware of a human response. God has thereby made himself vulnerable: He asks for man’s response and is hurt when it is not forthcoming.”
