A free searchable database of 1,275,833 deaths in the state of New Jersey between 2001-2017, and over 500,000 free digitized images of the death index for the years 1901-1903, 1920-1929, and 1949-2000.
We were able to get all of the New Jersey death index records for about half of 1920-1924, all of 1925-1929, and then from 1949 to 2017! The files prior to 2001 are available in PDF format, each of them scanned images of typeset pages and old dot-matrix printouts.
How to Obtain Death Records in New Jersey. A requester can obtain a copy of a New Jersey death record at the state’s Department of Health’s Office of Vital Statistics and Registry. The Office of Vital Statistics preserves and provides access to death records dated from 1919 to the present.

This collection is an index to deaths filed at the New Jersey State Clerk Offices from 1920-1929 and 1949-2017. The index contains the given and surname of the deceased, the year of death, and the state file number. Some records contain death location and or birth location.
