Go to Contacts Sync > Accounts, and sign into your Google account.

From what you've shared, it sounds like there may be additional accounts on your iPhone, that are actively syncing your contacts. I'd suggest checking Settings > Contacts > Default Account to verify the current account being used by Contacts when groups are created.
