Bridgeway Bible Commentary. 1:1-2:47 BIRTH OF THE CHURCH. The task ahead (1:1-11) Theophilus, to whom the book is addressed, was apparently a person of influence to whom Luke wished to give a reliable account of the origins and development of Christianity.
(7) God made the firmament. —This wide open expanse upon earth’s surface, supplied by the chemistry of nature—that is, of God—with that marvellous mixture of gases which form atmospheric air, was a primary necessity for man’s existence and activity.
Verse 1. This verse tells us that all people spoke one language. But chapter 10 tells us that people spoke many languages. (See Genesis 10:5, 20, 31.) And chapter 10 is before chapter 11. There are two possible explanations for this. · Genesis usually tells us things in the order that they happened. But sometimes it does not do this.
