While the global population is still increasing in absolute numbers, population growth peaked decades ago. In the chart, we see the global population growth rate per year. This is based on historical UN estimates and its medium projection to 2100.
World population trends. It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to grow to one billion – then in just another 200 years or so, it grew sevenfold. In 2011, the global population reached the seven billion mark, and in November 2022, it reached eight billion.
