In my opinion no deep study of the battle can be done without these two works. Two of my favorites are Early Photography at Gettysburg by William Frassanito (all of his work is top notch) and High Tide at Gettysburg by Glenn Tucker, my favorite single volume history of the battle.

Bradley Gottfried's The Maps of Gettysburg is also very good and a good alternative if you're not really ready for 510 pages of minutely detailed battle maps. In regards to photos, I recommend everything by William Frassanito, but start with his groundbreaking book Gettysburg: A Journey In Time.

Can anyone recommend a good book (or books) about Gettysburg? I know the basics about it, but I’ve found that my knowledge is moderately influenced by the movie “Gettysburg”, which isn't bad, but cuts out some of the most interesting stories (I.e the 1st Minnesota or the Irish Brigade).
