The geologic time scale or geological time scale (GTS) is a representation of time based on the rock record of Earth. It is a system of chronological dating that uses chronostratigraphy (the process of relating strata to time) and geochronology (a scientific branch of geology that aims to determine the age of rocks).

Formal geologic time begins with the Archean Eon (4.0 billion to 2.5 billion years ago) and continues to the present day. Modern geologic time scales also include the Hadean Eon (4.6 billion to 4.0 billion years ago).

Today, the geologic time scale is divided into major chunks of time called eons. Eons may be further divided into smaller chunks called eras, and each era is divided into periods . Figure 12.1 shows you what the geologic time scale looks like.
