After completing Genki 2, you should have a decent chance of passing the JLPT N4, which is the “survival and basic daily life” level of Japanese. There is still information that you might be lacking, in terms of N4. Vocabulary, some grammar and maybe a couple of kanji.

A typical "university-level" Japanese course that uses Genki (which many do) will take four semesters (2 per book), so that's something like 18 months. However, that's at a pretty glacial pace, with approximately 3 hours of active in-class study time per week.
