I'd go for the M40 as I'm familiar with it in my time serving as a medic. Plus it has the NATO universal 40mm threads for filters, unlike the M50 which goes for dual cheek filters like the M17 gas mask of Vietnam to Desert Storm.
I recommend checking out newer models of gas masks that are in active duty, as well as those used in the war in Ukraine and by other NATO members. I got myself the CM-7M from Mira , and I'm super pleased with it.
For this, 3M reusable respirators are the best value, and will cover a majority of the most likely emergency scenarios - wildfire smoke (most people die due to smoke inhalation, not fires), toxic rubble dust (see: 9/11 responders cancer rates).
