Ganged hooks prevent bite offs when presenting whole baits or large strips, but the rig is a bit stiff when hooking two hooks together through the hook eye. Using a swivel to join the hooks gives the bait more flexibility and the bait floats about more naturally. For this rig you'll need.
Match the size of the gang-hooks to the size of the pilchards available for best hook coverage. If the wind is up, fish metal slugs in the 40-80g range to maximise casting distance in poor conditions.

1 wrz 2023 · I've used them several times out there for legered dead baits and picked up tailor, which definitely would need wire on a single hook set-up. UK pennell rigs for big worm would be something similar but the top hook in those is not passed through the eye of the bottom hook - it's left free-running on the trace line.
Most prefer a gang hook rig, consisting of 3-4 hooks, a short 20-40lb fluorocarbon trace, a swivel, and a surf sinker above that. This will allow your bait to waft just off the bottom enticingly until a tailor comes along. The gang hooks act like a wire trace, preventing bite-offs most of the time.

6 kwi 2018 · I've been surprised to catch even small tailor bellow 2kg with gang hooks hanging from their mouths that have opened during capture. I use 6/0 - 10/0 octopus or octopus circles for my main Jewie rigs. I just use 4/0-6/0 for the pillie rigs depending on the size of the pillies. Posted April 10, 2018.
