I wanted to revive my PSP FAT which is almost as old as it's release date, but I always have had this 1 glaring issue, with UMD drive not working.
I have a CF on a psp that i bought second hand and after playing some games on the SD card I decided to try some physical games. However some of them requiers a higher firmware and I need to update. Will I break something if I try to update with a UMD?
The PSP had firmware updates as well, and certain games strongly encouraged you to do so. But many had a workaround: The firmware loaded from the UMD itself. This meant your minimum firmware version could be rolled back, or that in some cases you didn't need to update and then rollback at all, as it was all loaded from the UMD.

Updates can be obtained in four ways: Direct download to the PSP over Wi-Fi.
To do this: – Insert a UMD game disc into your PSP which contains a firmware update. – Navigate to “Settings” and select “System Update”. – Choose “Update via UMD” and follow the on-screen instructions to start updating your firmware.
If you end up making an ISO copy of your games, you will unable to update them by pressing triangle and update. You will need the UMD to update, but this method bypasses that.
