The title is written in a South African indigenous language, Xhosa, and means "Lord Bless Africa". The hymn was written to a tune by the Welsh composer, Joseph Parry, called "Aberystwyth". In 1925 it was adopted as the anthem of the African National Congress, and became a symbol of the anti-apartheid movement.
The song became a pan-African liberation song and versions of it were later adopted as the national anthems of five countries in Africa including Zambia, Tanzania, Namibia and Zimbabwe after independence, and South Africa after the end of apartheid.
