I just confirmed that "Cmd + ." worked for me on a fullscreen Youtube video to exit full screen. Safari, iPad Pro 10.5", Smartfolio Keyboard. Hitting Return did not work however.

Otherwise, no, to close an app simply click the home button on the iPad. Or use the hand gesture: With all 5 fingers on screen bring them together in the center.
