In this text, we will enter the world of academic writing by exploring how to craft the college essay. We will do this through an interactive discussion of the six main stages of the writing process and the six main elements of the essay format.
Chapter 1 introduced you to the essay form and to some basics of writing. This chapter explains and illustrates the sequence of steps in writing an effective essay. In particular, the chapter focuses on prewriting and revising—strategies that can help with every paper you write.
This is an overview of the steps of the writing process. As you grow as a writer, you’ll go deeper into each stage of the process. Here, we’re just trying to map it out for you. Now that you have a better understanding of the steps, let’s talk about what the writing process means for you.
1. Prewriting. This is anything that you do before you start writing your first draft. Prewriting can include: Brainstorm. Outline. Free write. Research. Reviewing data 2. Drafting. This occurs when you put your ideas into sentence and paragraph form. During this part of the process you are explaining, supporting, and expanding on your ideas.
1. FREEWRITING: Allows you to generate thoughts that will help you formulate ideas to write about. Put your pen to the paper, and begin to write. Do not stop to think, organize, critique, etc. – Just Write! Write as fast as you can, the faster the better. 2.
Using the Writing Process. These tables describe the four steps of the writing process: inventing, drafting, revising, and editing. Knowing when and how to use these steps will help you resolve common problems in your own writing and grow as an effective writer. 1) Invention. 2) Drafting. 3) Revision. 4) Editing.
By the end of this module, you will understand some basic concepts about the writing process. Rule vs. strategy-based writing. The uniqueness of your writing process. The writing process as iterative and chaotic. The importance of efficiency when writing. A key difference between expert and novice writers.
