One of the smallest but most vibrant communities in Belize consists of people of East Indian descent. The Indian subcontinent, now home to more than a billion people, was long coveted by Europeans for its abundance of silk, spices, and other luxury items.
30 cze 2024 · Today, indigenous Mayan music can still be heard in the Yucatán and Chiapas regions, where it has been influenced by Christian religious festivities and European instruments. One example is the danza del agua, or water dance, accompanied by a cylindrical drum and a 12-string guitar.
Music and dancing are integral elements in Belizean culture, and it is now possible to hear a wide variety of different musical styles throughout the country, including reggae, punta, soca, dancehall, hip hop, rock n’ roll, and even heavy metal.

21 maj 2024 · At the 2024 Chocolate Fest of Belize, held in Punta Gorda Town, several cultures were highlighted through music and dance. The East Indian community was represented by three girls who wanted to find a way to connect with their heritage since they do not know the language and felt that dance would be the perfect medium to do so.
East Indians in Belize comprise four percent (7,000 persons) of the population. Understandably, they have lost almost all of their traditional Indian culture. Interestingly, Indians in Belize are longing to rediscover and re-claim their Indian history, heritage and culture.
