One way to 'smuggle' malware in when antivirus checks the network and system could be that the attackers encode the malware / payload of secondary stages as a video. In that sense mp4s could contain malware but viewing them in VLC or in a browser would generally be safe.
9 mar 2020 · An mp4 file isn't an executable, so it will not run any (malicious) code directly. Therefore, if a mp4 file contains malware that wants to execute instructions, it has to exploit a vulnerability (e.g. a buffer overflow) in the program that plays the file.

You can't make a malicious video that affects every player - you have to pick a specific player to attack. The main way to protect yourself is just 1.) use a fully patched player, like the current version of VLC, and 2.) don't play videos as root/admin, so even if the player is exploited it can't do much. 3 sie 2012 · The malware probably wouldn't be embedded in the video itself, but the video file would be specially crafted to exploit a vulnerability in the codec or media player, to gain code execution. The exploit would then download a file and run it, infecting the machine.
