When sending items to military personnel stationed overseas, understanding military shipping proper addressing is key. By following specific guidelines and using unique designations like APO, FPO, or DPO codes, senders can ensure that their packages reach their destination securely and without delay.
30 kwi 2015 · Effective May 31, 2015, the Postal Service™ will revise Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, Domestic Mail Manual (DMM ®) 703.2.2.1 to update military addressing standards, specifically APO and FPO military addresses.
Overseas military addresses must contain the APO or FPO designation along with a two–character “state” abbreviation of AE, AP, or AA and the ZIP Code or ZIP+4 Code. AE is used for armed forces in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Canada; AP is for the Pacific; and AA is the Americas excluding Canada.
APO/FPO/DPO mail will be delivered to military personnel across the globe as long as the military service member has an assigned ZIP code, also referred to as an APO/FPO/DPO number.
Individuals planning to transition from a military address that includes FPO, DPO or APO will have two options for changing their address: in person at a United States Postal Service location or at the USPS website online.
The Delivery Address Line for all APO/FPO military mail must be standardized to include the appropriate military address type with its assigned number, plus a box number. There are five possible military address types: CPR (Consolidated Postal Room), OPC (Official Postal Center), PSC (Postal Service Center), UPR (Unit Postal Room), and UNIT.
