Fountain Branch Carter, owner of the Carter House, was born in Halifax County, Virginia, on April 6, 1797, the oldest child of Francis Watkins and Sarah Holcomb Carter. The first of his line in Virginia was Giles Carter, who was living in Henrico County in 1676. "Fount" Carter, as he was called, was in the sixth generation of his family in America.
Son of Francis Watkins and Sarah Holcomb Anderson Carter, Fountain Branch Carter was born in Virginia and moved west to Tennessee with his family in the early 19th Century. The Francis Carter log home still stands on Waddell Hollow Road.

Introduction to Fountain Branch Carter: Fountain Branch Carter was born in Virginia in 1797 and moved to Tennessee when he was just a boy. Franklin was his home for nearly his entire life, and in 1823 he married Polly Atkinson.
In 1830, Fountain Branch Carter built a 1.5 story brick house just south of downtown Franklin for his small family. He and his wife Polly had 12 children, 8 of whom reached adulthood. In just 20 years the Carter farm grew from 19 acres to 288.
