Fort Foster, now part of Fort Foster Park, is a historic fort active 1901–1946 on the southwest tip of Gerrish Island in the Kittery Point area of Kittery, Maine. The park includes beaches and trails. [1] Battery Bohlen and Battery Chapin were the major parts of the fort. [2]

5 dni temu · The fort is named for a NH Civil War general whose picture is hanging in the state capitol in Concord. We visited a similar coastal defense site in western Canada during the winter last year and the place was alive with historians and reconstructed armories.
Located on Gerrish Island in Kittery, ME, Fort Foster functioned as a coastal fort during the Endicott Period, World War I and World War II and served to protect Maine’s southernmost tip. The fort was closed in 1948, and was later acquired by the town of Kittery for park purposes.
