For all three measures of food supply, we see a close correlation between per capita supply and prosperity. As we get richer, per capita supply tends to increase. This trend is especially pronounced in countries transitioning from low to upper-middle-income status.

The world average dietary energy supply (DES), measured as calories per capita per day, has been increasing steadily to 2 978 kcal per person per day in 2021, up 9 percent compared with 2010 (see F IGURE 51). It is the highest in Europe and the Americas at 3 458 kcal per person per day and 3 385 kcal per person per day, respectively.
