Vocal cords open and closed. Vocal cords are folds of throat tissues that are key in creating sounds through vocalization. The size of vocal cords affects the pitch of voice. They are composed of twin infoldings of mucous membrane stretched horizontally, from back to front, across the larynx.
Laryngoscopy is endoscopy of the larynx, part of the throat in order to view the vocal folds and the glottis. Many versions of the apparatus were invented in the 1800s. The one illustrated is a Tieman laryngoscope.

There are two folds, one on either side of the laryngeal cavity. Each fold is comprised of a vocal ligament, a vocalis muscle and a covering mucous membrane.

The glottis is located in the middle part of the laryngeal cavity, between the supraglottis and subglottis.
