HTI compiled this Report through a comprehensive examination of public court documents in federal human trafficking cases, as well as a detailed review of news stories and government press releases. Data within the State Reports are consistent with the 2021 Report’s methodology.
In SFY 2020-21, the total number of reports, accepted by the Florida Abuse Hotline (Hotline) alleging one of the human trafficking maltreatments was 2,289 involving 1,750 children.
State law defines child abuse to include child sex trafficking for purposes of accessing child welfare services. For purposes of finding a child to be independent, Florida law expressly includes child sex trafficking within the definition of “abuse” through incorporation of the definition of “sexual abuse.”.
