On the west wall, the symbol precedes the name; on the east wall, the symbol follows the name. A diamond symbol signifies that the service member’s death was confirmed. Those designated by a “plus” sign were considered to be missing in action when the war ended.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, commonly called the Vietnam Memorial, is a U.S. national memorial in Washington, D.C., honoring service members of the U.S. armed forces who served in the Vietnam War.
The Wall in Washington, DC has the names listed in the order of the date of death or when the person became missing. The earliest casualties are named on line 1 of panel 1 East, at the center of the Wall. The list of names goes down panel 1 East, then to the right to line 1 of panel 2 East.
