The original 24-85mm AF-S G (2002-2006) is a thoroughly modern lens, with astounding identical optical performance, but lacking VR. Otherwise, it's effectively the same lens but slightly smaller and much less expensive than the newest 24-85 VR .

This 24mm f/2.8 AF-D lens is a lightweight wide-angle lens for all Nikon digital, AF and manual-focus film cameras. It sells for about $360 brand-new. It has excellent optical performance for FX and RealRaw photography. This 24mm f/2.8 is sharper than the $1,850 14-24mm AF-S at 24mm.
Compelling is how great the 24mm f/1.4 looks at its huge maximum aperture of f/1.4, while the awful 24-120mm VR looks like mush, and it's shooting at f/3.5. The 24-85mm AF-S, 14-24mm AF-S and 16-35mm VR look great.
The lens we'll have a look at in this review offers an interesting compromise between those two groups, because it offers a zoom range of 24-85mm, so more than professional zooms, combined with an aperture range of f/2.8-4, which is up to one stop faster than comparable consumer zooms.
